Group Calls for More Oversight of Compound Pharmacies

Jared Wickerham/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Nearly a year after ameningitis outbreak killed more than 50 people, there are new ideas to prevent a repeat.
Tainted steroid injections made in Massachusetts caused last summer’s meningitis deaths but there are compound pharmacies all over the country that produce all sorts of medications without much oversight.
Now, a group of pharmacists, hospitals and public health officials says the Food and Drug Administration should be given more authority. The group also supports the creation of a do-not-compound list of medications that should not be mixed.
A congressional committee on Tuesday will hear testimony about compounding pharmacies, which are considered at high risk for contamination.
