THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 2012
AMERICAN SOCIETY OF HEALTH-SYSTEM PHARMACISTS PROVIDES RESOURCES ON SAFE COMPOUNDING AND OUTSOURCING. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) provides several resources to help pharmacists and other providers address the new responsibilities and demands resulting from the fungal meningitis outbreak caused by contaminated methylprednisolone acetate injection compounded by NECC. The ASHP Sterile Compounding Resource Center (http://www.ashp.org/sterilecompounding) includes tools to help ensure that sterile products are safe for patients such as the “Outsourcing Sterile Products Preparation: Contractor Assessment Tool” and publications such as a checklist of Eight Critical Steps Related to Sterile Compounding Services.
In addition, the ASHP Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers will hold a Webinar, “Compounding and Outsourcing – Ensuring Patient Safety for Health System Pharmacy" on Friday, November 16, 2012. The Webinar will feature several experts in sterile product preparation and insights from members who are dealing with particular issues resulting from the NECC tragedy. Registration is available online at: https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/763203184 ASHP has also added a breaking news session, “A Compounding Tragedy – A National Response,” to the Society’s Midyear Clinical Meeting that takes place December 5, 2012. The session will include representatives from FDA and NABP.
