Both the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the each state and territorial board of pharmacy regulate drug compounding by pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Minimum compliance with existing federal and local laws and regulations requires adherence with professional standards known most commonly as USP 797 and USP 795, limiting compounding to the amount necessary to meet the needs of individual patients who present valid prescriptions, and preparing custom-made dosages that are not widely available from pharmaceutical manufacturers.
