NOTE: One session on Compounding--Pharmacists to Focus on Safety, Abuse, and Crises Published: Dec 5, 2013 By Nancy Walsh, Staff Writer, MedPage Today

ORLANDO -- Pharmacists will be gathering here from around the country this weekend as the 2013 Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists(ASHP) commences.
A highlight of the meeting each year is a keynote address given by a prominent individual -- last year it was President Bill Clinton -- and this year's speaker will be retired general Colin L. Powell, who will offer his thoughts Monday morning on domestic and world affairs, leadership, and a vision for the future.
The meeting itself kicks off on Saturday at the Orange County Convention Center with a pharmacotherapy review and recertification course, as well as pre-meeting workshops.
Beginning on Sunday, there will be a wide array of educational sessions to meet the needs of all the different types of attendees, who include pharmacists and pharmacy technicians from various health systems including hospitals, inpatient and outpatient facilities, managed care centers, and the pharmaceutical industry.
Topics in the Sunday sessions include safety concerns and regulatory changes and their effects on pharmacy practice. There also will be talks on pharmacists and the medical home, preventing in-hospital adverse events with insulin, and new drugs of abuse such as spices, thedesigner drugs known as "bath salts," and salvia.
