Changes urged in lethal injections

The most humane form of lethal injection is a massive overdose of a single anesthetic or barbiturate — a different process from the three-drug protocol used in a botched Oklahoma execution last week, according to a report to be released Wednesday by a panel of criminal justice experts.
Death by lethal injection is a complicated procedure ripe for error and unintentional infliction of intense pain and suffering without proper drugs, skilled attendants and careful oversight, reported the panel from the Constitution Project, a Washington-based think tank that analyzes legal issues.
The perils of the method appeared evident April 29 when condemned murderer Clayton Lockett took 43 minutes to die after being administered a series of three drugs. Witnesses said he writhed, groaned, mumbled words and convulsed, at one point appearing to try to sit up.
