Meningitis outbreak: 16th TN victim identified-Sept 20, 2013


A 67-year-old Rockwood man who raised horses and cattle is the 16th Tennessee fatality to be identified in a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak, court papers show.
According to a wrongful death suit filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Nashville, Donald McDavid died on Nov. 4, 2012, a little over a month after receiving the second of two injections with a fungus-tainted steroid at the Specialty Surgery Center in Crossville.
According to the latest data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 16 Tennessee patients died from the outbreak while 153 have been sickened. Nationally there have been 64 deaths and 750 patients sickened.
