Fifth Question of the Day July 30, 2014 How many patients know about the overlap between IACP and PCCA and that PCCA housed IACP for years and then in fact named the IACP building after IACP raised 1 millon dollars for its new headquarters?

IACP Headquarters
For many years, PCCA generously provided office space to IACP.

While this invaluable gift is appreciated, IACP determined it was

important to establish an independent identity and began to

explore the building of a new IACP Headquarters. In June 2003,

IACP began fundraising for its first-ever Capital Campaign —
Bricks, Mortar & Pestle: Building a Foundation for the Future.
The campaign goal was two-fold:

1. Raise $500,000 to establish a permanent endowment

funding research and education initiatives advancing

pharmacy compounding; and

2. Raise $1,000,000 to fund a new headquarters for IACP.

This campaign was successfully completed in 2005 with Members’

contributions exceeding the Foundation’s goal to raise $1.5 million

by $500,000, for a total of $2 million. The additional funds were

designated to the Foundation’s endowment for research and education.

Construction on the building began in August 2005 and was expected

to be completed in first quarter 2006.

In honor and recognition of the in-kind and financial support

throughout the years, PCCA was given the naming rights to the

building. As a result, the name of the new headquarters is the

Kay Sparks IACP Building.

Automation Helps Compounding Pharmacies Meet Compliance Standards

July 30, 2014

The passage last year of federal legislation to regulate pharmacy compounding was not only necessary but long overdue. Compounding pharmacies had historically been regulated at the state level, even though some produced drugs that were being sold in other states. Meanwhile, the public remained largely unaware of the compounding industry, confident that their health care providers would never inject them with anything that was not safe.

A compounded preparation is needed when

    no commercially manufactured medication is

available to adequately address a patient’s

medical needs. Among the greatest therapeutic

challenges faced by both patients and caregivers

is the treatment required by individuals who

have a terminal condition. It is difficult to find

    evidence-based studies on the management

of end-of-life situations because each patient’s

medical case is unique. In addition, maintaining

a controlled environment for such patients is

difficult. End-of-life care is multifaceted; it does

not lend itself to “cookbook medicine,” and

people with a terminal illness are among the

most vulnerable patients in need of effective and

compassionate care. When those patients suffer

in spite of commercially available therapies,

the innovation and experience of clinicians

and compounding pharmacists can often yield

a solution to the most challenging treatment

problems. In this presentation, we discuss some

of the most often prescribed compounds used

in outpatient hospice and palliative care to

treat common conditions (wounds, pain and

dyspnea, intractable cough, nausea and vomiting,

depression, bladder infections caused by an

indwelling catheter, rectal pain). The effectiveness

of the preparations we describe is substantiated

in the medical literature and by our personal

    experience, which together encompasses nearly

100 years of clinical practice. The medications

described in this report have been shown over

    time to be effective.

What Hospitals Need to Know about the New Drug Compounding Law

This webinar is brought to you by the Children’s Hospital Affinity Group of the In-House Counsel and Teaching Hospitals and Academic Medical Centers Practice Groups and is co-sponsored by the Hospitals and Health Systems and Life Sciences Practice Groups.
    Description
This webinar will describe the new drug compounding law passed by Congress last year, the safety issues that precipitated it, and the timeline for implementation. Hospitals often depend on customized medications, particularly for sterile injectable products and for non-sterile drugs for special populations, such as customized dosages for children, infants, neonates, and geriatric patients. Hospitals sometimes compound medications in their own pharmacies, or rely on outside sources for their compounded medications. In 2012, an outbreak of fungal meningitis and other infections among patients who received a contaminated version of a compounded steroid injection prompted Congress to clarify federal and state oversight of drug compounding.
This webinar will analyze what the changes in the Drug Quality and Security Act mean for hospitals, both for their own drug compounding and their acquisition of compounded drugs from outside pharmacies and outsourcers. Additionally, the presenters will discuss strategies that health systems can employ to ensure the safety and effectiveness of compounded drug preparations.

Third Question of the Day July 28, 2014 Is it legal and appropriate for a pharmacy to advertise it has or is a pain management center?

FedEx charges raise online pharmacy issues

SAN FRANCISCO — FedEx Corp., the latest company accused in a federal probe involving illegal online pharmacies, says it will fight the charges that it knowingly shipped drugs to people who lack valid prescriptions.
The company says it would have to invade the privacy of customers to stop such deliveries. By contrast, UPS Inc. paid $40 million last year to resolve similar allegations and vowed to overhaul its procedures and work with investigators to detect suspicious activity. The contrasting responses to the decade-long federal probe of the prescription drug black market underscore the difficulty shippers have in determining how far to go to ferret out illicit online pharmacies among their customers and to alert the government. Wall Street analysts, legal experts, anti-drug crusaders and the companies themselves are split on the issue.

    A New Age for Tramadol

Big news has once again hit the world of pharmacy recently: Tramadol is now scheduled as a schedule IV controlled substance in all states according to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).1 On July 2, 2014 the DEA announced this update in the Federal Register.2 Tramadol and any product containing the substance will require a “C-IV” notification on all its labels as of August 18, 2014.1 Schedule IV is “defined as drugs with a low potential for abuse and low risk of dependence” according to the DEA.3
