Outsourcing Sterile Compounding: Proposed Regulations and Safety Considerations

Program Overview:
Sterile compounded medications are used in almost every hospital in the country. Often such products are prepared onsite, but increasingly hospital pharmacies are choosing to outsource the preparation of these products to external admixtures service providers. Recently, a national and deadly outbreak of meningitis linked to products prepared by a compounded pharmacy in Massachusetts has refocused attention on the significant gaps in regulatory authority over these entities. Health-system pharmacies are thus challenged to ensure safety with the purchase of outsourced products. Oversight through federal and state regulations had been proposed to close these "gaps," and therefore improve the safety of sterile compounded preparations. Join our speakers as they describe existing laws and regulations and the anticipated changes associated with proposed state and federal legislation. In addition, accreditation requirements for hospitals using outsourced compounded sterile preparations will be discussed. Speakers will also discuss current and proposed regulation accreditation requirements for hospitals that use compounded pharmacies, in-house preparation versus outsourcing, and considerations when selecting an outsourced pharmacy.
