Sixth Question of the Day July 14, 2014 This is something that has troubled me every since I began the law of compounding drugs and medications. Compounding Advocates make the argument that compounding has been around forever and thus they should get to continue to compound because historically they have compounded. Well In early recorded history, surgery wasassociated with barber surgeons who were both haircutters who also used their cutting tools to undertake surgical proceduress. With time and advances in medicine, the professions of barbers and surgeons had separated into two professions and barber surgeons disappear, but according to compounding pharmacists logic barbers/hairstylist should be allowed to perform surgeries today, right? Times changes, roles changes, laws change, right? Just as we may see a future of only robots doing sterile compounding with a pharmacist overseeing the robot not overseeing pharmacy techs.
