News that three trainers and a track employee at Penn National Race Course outside Harrisburg had been busted by the FBI for doping horses came as Congress trained its sights on the endemic problem of illegal drugs use in racing.
At the same time a report released Thursday by the California Racing Commission revealed Hall of Farm trainer Bob Baffert gave thyroid medicine to all of his race horses without indication any of them suffered from thyroid problems, the New York Times reported.
Among the trainers indicted in the Pennsylvania case was David Wells, 39, who has won 103 races and more than $1.5 million in purses this year. One of his horses Rapid Redux, won a special Eclipse Award last year after
The indictment said Wells "routinely injected" horses with prohibited substances.
