NABP Summarizes Massachusetts House Compounding Draft Legislation

Massachusetts House Considers Compounding Bill

 Topics: Compounding
Legislation intended to help ensure the safety of drugs compounded in Massachusetts is being considered by the state’s House of Representatives. The proposed bill (H 3548) would require that resident and nonresident pharmacies obtain a specialty license from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Pharmacy if they will be engaging in compounding sterile products. Among other provisions, the bill would also require the following:
  • Unannounced inspections of sterile compounding pharmacies,
  • Training in United States Pharmacopeia Chapter <797> standards for all state pharmacy inspectors,
  • Clear labeling of compounded medications, and
  • Reporting of compounded drug production (type and volume) by pharmacies.
The bill also includes provisions aimed to improve communication among prescribers, pharmacies, government officials, and the public. Additional information is available in a press release (PDF) and in a fact sheet (PDF) from the office of Representative Jeffrey Sanchez, chair of the Massachusetts Joint Committee of Public health, which authored the bill.
