Please Read This Discussion Board All the Way to the End Regarding Pentosan--no stability test required??? don't worry about beyond use date??? Someone please comment and let the readers know what to look out for with veterinary compounds and some compounders maybe cheaper because they are not doing the required testing!!

    Default Pentosan - Best Price?

I'm going to be giving my reiner Pentosan this show season, on the recommendation of my vet. She indicated that I could order from Wedgewood and she'd call in the prescription, or I could order from PreRace or such without a prescription?

Does it matter which I get it from?

Also, I forgot to get syringes and needles from her - what size do I need of each (yes I could call if need be).

I've done Adequan in the past and always gotten needles from my vet, but since it's so hard to get right now I'm going to give Pentosan a try.

I get mine from wedgewood, it is much cheaper than horseprerace. I use a 12cc syringe because a 6cc is too small for my horse's dose. I use whatever needles I have on hand, generally a 22x1 1/2 inch.

Alright, so Wedgewood won't give me pricing over the phone unless I get my vet to call in the prescription first. I'm going to be doing the single dose vials because it's for just one horse. How much cheaper are we talking about? Pre-race is $40 per dose.

I don't know, buying single dose vials defeats the purpose in my opinion.

Wedgewood, if I could ever get my &*&)$*#)*)@@) vet to call in the RX there!!! Ugh.

Are you doing single doses from Horse Pre Race? I am currently using Pent Aussie (pentosan and glucosamine) and it's a lot more- $60 a dose. You can find it for around $50 online (RX needed) so the loading dose is about $200. Wedgewood is still the cheapest.

I specifically inquired with Horse Pre Race about their Pentosan. They said it's compounded. I asked by who and where, and the response was "it's the same formulation as the others". So, that could be the same formulation in someone's basement that Wedgewood makes under strick sanitary conditions at a reputable pharmacy, at less cost too.

How long can you store the larger vial after the first dose? I thought it was a pretty short time frame, and even if I do a series of five injections as a loading dose and every 4 weeks after, I was under the impression the larger vial would go bad before I used it all?

The last 50ml bottle I bought from Wedgewood was $109 plus shipping. At the standard 6ml dose it's about $16/dose. For that price you can give it every two weeks for way less an $40. I don't even know if you can get single dose vials from Wedgewood--never bothered to ask.

I have to do this - sorry - it's like a psa since a poster made a comment regarding Wedgewoods safe and sterile conditions which I involuntarily recoiled from. Just because sterility seems to be a real issue in many compounding pharmacies and even drug companies these days (survey the national drug recall list and reasons for many of them include sterility issues). Many compounding pharmacies that are thought to be "sterile" and safe have been cited by the FDA. Wedgewood is, of course, one of them.

You can find letters citing infractions by compounding pharmacies on this page: http://www.fda.gov/ICECI/Enforcement...rs/default.htm.

These are just the places that are reviewed and "caught" - and I doubt these visits are surprises so this is them being caught even on their best behavior.

Here is just one example of a letter to Wedgewood this year - but they have been cited many times over the years for many, many issues. http://www.fda.gov/ICECI/Enforcement.../ucm387249.htm

I'm not doing this to rip apart Wedgewood but just to remind everyone that there are some serious safety issues with this and many compounding pharmacies. Be vigilant.

When I last purchased from Wedgewood, it was the same as someone above, $109 plus $10 to ship for 50 ml. I also had some from another compounding pharmacy that was around $150 or so for 50 ml but that was through the vet so probably marked up. They all were good for 6 months. Since I was using it on multiple horses, no problem getting it used up!

It doesn't "go bad" after the expiration date. My understanding is that Wedgewood's compounded medications have a 6 mo expiry, because they are not required by the FDA to do stability testing to determine an actual expiration date. Obviously they should be stored at CRT and care taken not to contaminate the vial, but it's not like hamburger that starts to rot in the fridge after the "use by" date.
