Compounded Medications Linked With Eye Infection Outbreaks

Public health investigators traced the largest US outbreak of fungal endophthalmitis to environmental mold that contaminated medications produced by a Florida compounding pharmacy. The infections also represent one of the largest outbreaks in the United States attributed to a contaminated compounded medication.
The investigation began in March 2012 after the California Department of Public Health received reports that 9 patients developed fungal endophthalmitis after they had undergone pars plana vitrectomies at the same Los Angeles County ambulatory surgical center. Records showed that all 9 patients had been exposed to a single lot of Brilliant Blue G dye (BBG), which is used to stain epiretinal membranes during vitrectomies.
