A legislative hearing has been scheduled at the Massachusetts State House to
address potential changes in the oversight of compounding pharmacies like the
one at the center of a deadly fungal meningitis outbreak.
According to the Associated Press, lawmakers called for the hearing last week, around the same time the board’s director, James Coffey was fired for apparent lapses in regulatory enforcement concerning complaints about the New England Compounding Center. The Framingham-based outfit is accused of shipping tainted vials of injectable steroids that caused the meningitis outbreak. More than 30 people have died as a result, while hundreds more have been infected.
According to AP, the pharmacy board is part of the Department of Public Health, which also faces questions about its oversight of a now-closed state lab where a former chemist allegedly mishandled drug tests.
