U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts’ conservative credentials haven’t protected him from criticism by a coalition that calls one of his bills “the most anti-life bill headed for passage since 2010,” The Kansas City Starreports.
Roberts introduced a bill that would tighten regulation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of compounding pharmacies, which create custom medications. The Kansas senator has favored more regulation of the pharmacies since Kansas City pharmacist Robert Courtney admitted to diluting chemotherapy medication and strengthened after an outbreak of meningitis that killed 61 last year was traced to a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy.
But a coalition led by the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons is firmly against Roberts’ bill, claiming it could restrict access to a compounded drug that helps prevent premature births, the report says. The group fears that such a move would increase the incidence of abortion.
