Illinois Suspends Pharmacy License of Company Linked to Meningitis Outbreak

CHICAGO – The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) has suspended the pharmacy license of New England Compounding Center (NECC), a Massachusetts based pharmacy that dispensed compounded medicine in Illinois.  Many of those products were recalled after patients in other states who received those drugs were diagnosed with fungal meningitis.
The action taken by IDFPR follows the voluntary surrender of NECC’s license in several states, including Massachusetts.  The license suspension is effective immediately, will stay in place indefinitely, and will remain on NECC’s licensure history as a disciplinary action.  If NECC seeks to restore its license in Illinois, it will have to meet stringent requirements outlined in the attached consent order.  Under the terms of the consent order, NECC will first have to show its license is restored in other states before its Illinois license would be eligible for restoration.
Any new Illinois notifications regarding fungal meningitis case counts will be posted  on the Illinois Department of Public Health website atwww.idph.state.il.us. Nationwide fungal meningitis case counts can be found on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website at http://www.cdc.gov/hai/outbreaks/meningitis.html.
