HSCA Applauds FDA for Leadership on Improving Safety of Drug Compounding

Healthcare Supply Chain Association President Curtis Rooney today released the following statement on recent Food and Drug Administration (FDA) guidance on improving the safety of compounded drugs:
“The Healthcare Supply Chain Association and our group purchasing organization (GPO) members applaud Commissioner Hamburg and the FDA for their leadership on improving the safety of compounded drugs and drug compounding facilities.
“HSCA and its members are supply chain leaders in patient safety and product sourcing. We support, as best practice, large commercial compounders of sterile injectable drugs registering with the FDA as outsourcing facilities in order to help maintain proper oversight and to better meet the needs of the patients they serve.
“While compounders are not legally required to register with FDA, HSCA believes that doing so is an important step that will help assure patients and the general public that sound manufacturing practices are being followed.
“Because GPOs do not take title to these drugs, and because we rely on the expertise of FDA’s safety and quality inspections, it is critical to patient safety that FDA has the best tools at its disposal to maintain appropriate oversight of compounding facilities.”
