PharmaHealth to close 2 New Bedford stores

NEW BEDFORD — PharmaHealth Pharmacy announced Monday that it will close its two city stores.
“PharmaHealth Pharmacy would like to express gratitude and heartfelt thanks to all our loyal patients throughout the years,” the company said.
Customers with prescriptions at the two pharmacies are directed to fill them at nearby Rite-Aid pharmacies, where the prescriptions have been transferred, according to a statement from the company. People with prescriptions at the 458 Dartmouth St. pharmacy can go to the Rite Aid at 1383 Cove Road and those with prescriptions at 2206 Acushnet Ave. can go to the Rite Aid at 1207 Acushnet Ave.
Two other PharmaHealth Pharmacy stores in Fairhaven and North Dartmouth will continue to operate, the company said.
Officials with PharmaHealth did not return two requests for comment Monday.
First named the Medicine Shoppe, PharmaHealth pharmacy opened in 1977, “based on the notion that a personalized approach to medication management resulted in healthy, happy patients and dear friends,” according to the company's statement.
In February 2013, PharmaHealth was one of 11 compounding pharmacies ordered by the state to completely or partially shut down operations following a state crackdown prompted by a deadly meningitis outbreak that began with New England Compounding Center in Framingham.
The state Department of Public Health issued PharmaHealth a cease-and-desist order for all sterile compounding after inspectors determined it was doing sterile compounding despite an earlier statement to the contrary.
In March of 2013, PharmaHealth laid off nine full-time employees and one part-time worker, a 10 percent staff reduction. A company official said the layoffs were a result of poor performance in the second half of 2012 and had nothing to do with the cease-and-desist order related to the compounding issue.
