Derby man charged in Fairfield bust of alleged steroid ring

FAIRFIELD >> A Derby man has been arrested in connection with a network that police said manufactured and sold illegal steroids and Human Growth Hormone in southwestern Connecticut.

Jerry Mazzuoccolo, 30, was arrested at his 10 Hawthorne Ave. home Wednesday and charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, possession of a controlled substance and operating a drug factory.

Fairfield Police also arrested Chris Puzzio, 32, of 233 Algonquin Trail, Trumbull. He faces the same charges as Mazzuoccolo. A third man, Sean Jackson, of Bridgeport, was arrested in New York on narcotics charges, police said.

The investigation began in April, police said in a press release Friday. Detectives uncovered a large-scale (high quality) anabolic steroid and human growth hormone manufacturing and distribution network, police said, in conjunction with the illegal distribution of narcotic pain medications.

“Detectives discovered structure sums of money were being wired overseas in exchange for raw materials that form the base compound for anabolic steroids,” the press release said. “That material, slightly compounded and heated, is then bottled in liquid form or encapsulated in powdered form for injectable and oral consumption.”

Police said the detectives learned that the steroids were then being sold in Fairfield and Greater Bridgeport. Police told the Fairfield Citizen they are concerned some of the drugs may have been purchased by high school students, but there is not any definitive evidence of that.
