Last Year Texas racing industry pondering changes after quarter horse owner accused of helping Zetas launder money

For several years, horse owners at Lone Star Park watched Balch Springs bricklayer José Treviño Morales and his Tremor Enterprises become one of the nation’s largest buyers of quarter horses.
As his horses won top prizes, including the state’s richest annual race in Grand Prairie, his growing operation drew further interest.
Federal allegations this month that the Mexican drug cartel Zetas used Treviño’s position in the quarter horse industry to launder money were hardly a surprise, nationally known breeder Jim Helzer of Arlington said.
Helzer and other prominent owners agree the case highlights a need for reform in the racing business, but finding solutions is complicated.
