Know your pharmacist, for your health's sake

The fungal meningitis issue in our state has cast a sharp light on the process of compounding. As tragic as this health care problem is, we know that it isn’t an issue about compounding but a reminder of how important it is to know your pharmacist.
Compounding is one of the fundamental tools of pharmacy and one we employ every day. It can create a medication that works more effectively, tastes better or simply solves a problem that a traditional medication can’t. But by its very nature — customized medications — it requires that your pharmacist know something about you and that you know your pharmacist.
We know our doctors, our dentists, our children’s teachers, our veterinarian. But it’s rare to actually know the person who is preparing your medications. This is an interesting commentary on the importance we ascribe to certain relationships, and we are amazed that for most folks, knowing the name of the person who is providing you a controlled substance is not important
