Rugby Ferrous Sulfate Supplement Recalled By Edward Lamb, January 20, 2013

Advance Pharmaceuticals has recalled one lot of 100-count bottles of 325-mg Rugby Natural Iron Supplement Ferrous Supplement tablets. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, thecompany initiated the recall on Dec. 28, 2012, after a pharmacist contacted Advance to report finding a bottle filled with prescription meclizine hydrochloride 25-mg tablets.

Meclizine, which Pfizer markets under the brand name Antivert and is also available in numerous generic formulations, is indicated for relieving nausea and vomiting related to motion sickness and vertigo. Ferrous sulfate replaces missing iron in the blood streams of people experiencing anemia. Mixing up the medication with the dietary supplement can have life-threatening consequences.

Infants with untreated iron deficiency can suffer developmental delays, and older children and adults with iron deficiency anemia often feel weak and can have trouble concentrating or remembering important information.

The side effects from meclizine range from upset stomach to coma and respiratory distress. The most severe problems are most likely to occur in babies, nursing women and senior citizens, who are the patient populations most likely to be taking supplement iron.

Recalled bottles of Rugby-brand ferrous sulfate come from lot 12G468 and are marked with the expiration date 07/14 and the UPC barcode 0 0536-5890-01 3. Questions about returns and refunds should be directed to Advance Pharmaceuticals by phone at (631) 981-4600.
